Laying the foundation stone marks a new era for the global leader in high-tech food processing systems
Nieuwpoort, Belgium - April 30, 2024 - Marelec Food Technologies has marked the beginning of a new chapter by laying the foundation stone for its expansive new facility in Nieuwpoort, Belgium. The ceremony, graced by the esteemed presence of the Governor of West Flanders, Carl Decaluwé, heralds a transformative phase for the renowned company.
Last year, Marelec celebrated its 40th anniversary, but the ultimate gift is on hold until the middle of next year. The 150 employees of Marelec are eagerly awaiting their move from Redanweg to Westendelaan, where construction of an expansive new building spanning 11,000m2 is currently underway.
Founded by Piet Rommelaere and his father Marcel in 1983, Marelec has evolved into a global player in the field of high-tech portioning and sorting systems, with a focus on developing its own software. The company's innovative solutions ensure that meat, poultry, and fish are efficiently packaged for supermarkets worldwide. Marelec's success caught the attention of Duravant, an American corporation specializing in providing technical equipment and automation solutions for the food processing, packaging, and material handling sectors, which acquired the company. However, Piet and his sister Katrien remain owners of the buildings, taking on the role of developers for the new facility.
"We are investing in the new building because we strongly believe in the future of the company," explains Piet Rommelaere. Marelec's commitment to innovation has propelled it to the forefront of its industry, driving the need for expanded facilities. "At Redanweg, we have no room for expansion, hence this investment," adds Managing Director Joeri De Vriesere. "The three floors high offices block will be the centerpiece. Our production area will nearly double in size from the current 6,000 to 11,000m2, with the potential for further expansion. We aim to create a flexible production space with a streamlined workflow and, eventually, a demonstration area."
